This paper presents an evaluation of various cooperative diversity techniques applied to future satellite digital multimedia broadcasting (S-DMB) systems. The increasing importance of hybrid and/or integrated satellite and terrestrial networks is associated with the utilization of spatial diversity techniques such as antenna diversity using space-time coding. The space-time coding schemes can be expected to result in more diversity gain as the number of transmit antennas are increased. However, we cannot design a rate-1 scheme that achieves full diversity for more than two transmit antennas. To overcome this limitation, quasi-orthogonal schemes were proposed, at the expense of the decoder complexity and diversity gain. In this paper, we introduce an efficient quasi-orthogonal space time coding scheme, and evaluate various aspects associated with the application of the proposed scheme to satellite systems. The proposed scheme in this paper provides the full rate as well as maximum-likelihood decoding via simple linear detection.

Howling is very annoying problem to the hearing-aid users and it limits the maximum usable gain of hearing aids. We propose a new feedback cancellation system by inserting a time-varying decorrelation filter in the forward path. We use a second-order all-pass filter with control parameters whose time variation is implemented using a low-frequency modulator. A noticeable reduction of weight-vector misalignment is achievable using our proposed method.

Scalable video coding (SVC) was standardized as an extension of H.264/AVC by the JVT (Joint Video Team) in Nov. 2007. The biggest feature of SVC is multi-layered coding where two or more video sequences are compressed into a single bit-stream. This letter proposes a fast block mode decision algorithm in spatial enhancement layer of SVC. The proposed algorithm achieves early decision by limiting the number of candidate modes for block with certain characteristic called same motion vector block (SMVB). Our proposed method reduces the complexity, in terms of encoding time by up to 66.17%. Nevertheless, it shows negligible PSNR degradation by only up to 0.16 dB and increases the bit-rate by only up to 0.64%, respectively.

Existing query tree protocols deal with RFID tags in a blind manner. They query tags in a fixed bit order based on the assumption that the tag ID numbers are uniformly distributed throughout the range of the entire ID space because readers have no prior knowledge of the tags. This paper attempts to distinguish RFID applications where readers are already aware of all tags used by the application. We propose a heuristic query tree (H-QT) protocol that uses heuristic to select effective bits from known tags for the best queries in a divide and conquer approach. The performance evaluation shows that the proposed protocol is superior to original query tree protocols because it significantly reduces the number of tag collisions and no tag response.

For a baseband pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) signal limited to Nyquist frequency, mathematical derivation of the timing recovery for a fourth-law circuit followed by a band-pass filter is carried out. The results show that the derived timing wave is expressed as a function of the pulse shape entering the timing path and the bandpass filter tuned to the pulse repetition frequency.

Poly-Si TFT (Thin Film transistor) fabricated below 170 using excimer laser crystallization of sputtered Si films was characterized. In particular, a gate insulator with a breakdown field exceeding 8 MV/cm was deposited by using ICP (Inductively Coupled Plasma) CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition). A buffer layer possessing high thermal conductivity was inserted between the active channel and the plastic substrate, in order to protect the plastic substrate from the thermal energy of the laser and to increase adhesion of Si film on plastic. Using this method, we successfully fabricate TFT with a stable electron field-effect mobility value greater than 14.7 cm2/Vsec.

The TLS method is an unbiased estimator for solving the overdetermined set of linear equations when errors occur in all data. However it doesn't show robustness while the errors have a heavy tailed pdf. In this letter we derive a robust method of TLS (ROTLS) based on the characteristics of TLS solution, where the performance of ROTLS is verified by applying it to the system identification problem.

Nowadays, many interface devices or training systems have been developed with recent developments in IT technology, but only a few training systems for developmentally disabled people have been introduced. In this paper, we present a real-time, interactional and situational training system based on augmented reality in order to improve cognitive capability and adaptive ability in the daily lives of developmentally disabled people. Our system is specifically based on serving food in restaurants. It allows disabled people wearing the HMD attached with camera to conduct the training to cope with a series of situations safely while serving customers food and drinks and take the training session as much as they want. After experimenting on our presented system for 3 months, we found that they actively participated in the training and their cognitive abilities increasingly went faster through repeated training, resulting in the improvement in their cognitive ability and their ability to deal with situations.

In this paper, two methods for improving the performance of DSBC (Dynamic bit allocation Sub-Band Coder) are proposed. One is to modify the bit allocation algorithm since conventional dynamic bit allocation algorithm is computationally heavy, while the other one is to weight the subband to reduce hissing noise. Instead of inserting the Gaussian noise in regeneration of empty band, the subband weighting method is to utilize shaped subband signal as empty band signal. The simulation result shows that computational complexity is reduced about 10%, and perceptual hissing noise is suppressed noticeably.

The increasing demand for millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequencies with wider signal bandwidths, such as 5G NR, requires large investments on test equipment. This work presents a 5G mmWave up/down-converter with a 40 GHz LO, fabricated in custom PCBs with off-the-shelf components. The mmWave converter has broad IF and RF bandwidths of 1∼5 GHz and 21∼45 GHz, and the built-in LO generates 20∼29.5 GHz and 33.5∼40 GHz of output. To achieve high linearity of the converter simultaneously, the LO must produce low-phase-noise and be capable of high harmonics/spur rejection, and design techniques related to these features are demonstrated. Additionally, a reconfigurable IF amplifier for bi-directional conversion is included and demonstrates low gain variation to maintain the linearity of the wideband modulation signals. The final designed converter is tested with 5G OFDM 64-QAM 100 MHz 1-CC (4-CC) signals and shows RF/IF output power of -3/8 dBm with a linear range of 35 (30)/38 (33) dB at an EVM of 25 dB.

The aim of this letter is to guarantee the ability of low probability of intercept (LPI) and anti-jamming (AJ) by maximizing the energy efficiency (EE) to improve wireless communication survivability and sustain wireless communication in jamming environments. We studied a scenario based on one transceiver pair with a partial-band noise jammer in a Rician fading channel and proposed an EE optimization algorithm to solve the optimization problem. With the proposed EE optimization algorithm, the LPI and AJ can be simultaneously guaranteed while satisfying the constraint of the maximum signal-to-jamming-and-noise ratio and combinatorial subchannel allocation condition, respectively. The results of the simulation indicate that the proposed algorithm is more energy-efficient than those of the baseline schemes and guarantees the LPI and AJ performance in a jamming environment.

Acoustic Event Classification (AEC) poses difficult technical challenges as a result of the complexity in capturing and processing sound data. Of the various applicable approaches, Support Vector Machine (SVM) with Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) supervectors has been proven to obtain better solutions for such problems. In this paper, based on the multiple kernel selection model, we introduce two non-linear kernels, which are derived from the linear kernels of GMM Kullback-Leibler divergence (GMM KL) and GMM-UBM mean interval (GUMI). The proposed method improved the AEC model's accuracy from 85.58% to 90.94% within the domain of home AEC.

This paper proposes a one-way ranging method using reference-based broadcasting messages. The method is based on impulse radio UWB (Ultra-wideband) for wireless sensor networks. The proposed method reduces traffic overheads and increases the ranging accuracy using frequency offsets and counter information based on virtually synchronized counters between RNs (Reference Nodes) and MNs (Mobile Nodes). Simulation results show that the proposed method can alleviate the ranging errors comparing to SDS-TWR (Symmetric Double-Sided Two-Way Ranging) method in terms of the frequency offset.

In this paper, a predistorter using low frequency intermodulation (IM) signals is proposed. The harmonic generator of the proposed predistorter that consists of a hybrid coupler and four diodes biased separately extracts a second order low frequency IM signal. And with multiplication of second order IM signals, fourth order IM signal is obtained. A vector modulator, modulate fundamental signal with low frequency IM signals, generates predistortion IM signals and controls amplitude/phase of them with modulation factors. As a result, this predistorter is suppressed individual order intermodulation distortion signals of power amplifier effectively. The suggested predistorter has been manufactured to operate in Korea PCS base-station transmitting band (1840-1870 MHz). The test results show that the third order IM is cancelled more than 20 dB and the fifth order IM is cancelled about 10 dB for CW two-tone signals. Also, it's improved the adjacent channel power ratio (ACPR) more than 10 dB for CDMA (IS-95) signals.

In this paper, we propose a non-cooperative line-of-sight (LOS)/non-LOS channel identification algorithm with single node channel measurements based on time-of-arrival statistics. In order to improve the accuracy of channel identification, we adopt a recalibration interval in terms of measured distance to the proposed algorithm. Experimental results are presented in terms of identification probability and recalibration interval. The proposed algorithm involves a trade-off between the channel identification quality and the recalibration rate. However, depending on the recalibration interval, it is possible to greatly improve the sensitivity of the channel identification system.

When a dependency parser analyzes long sentences with fewer subjects than predicates, it is difficult for it to recognize which predicate governs which subject. To handle such syntactic ambiguity between subjects and predicates, we define an "a subject clause (s-clause)" as a group of words containing several predicates and their common subject. This paper proposes a two-phase method for S-clause segmentation. The first phase reduces the number of candidates of S-clause boundaries, and the second performs S-clause segmentation using decision trees. In experimental evaluation, the S-clause information turned out to be effective for determining the governor of a subject and that of a predicate in dependency parsing. Further syntactic analysis using S-clauses achieved an improvement in precision of 5 percent.

In this paper, we present a real-time hand pose recognition method to provide an intuitive user interface through hand poses or gestures without a keyboard and a mouse. For this, the areas of right and left hands are segmented from the depth camera image, and noise compensation is performed. Then, the rotation angle and the centroid point of each hand area are calculated. Subsequently, joint points and end points of a finger are detected by expanding a circle at regular intervals from a centroid point of the hand. Lastly, the hand pose is recognized by matching between the current hand information and the hand model of previous frame and the hand model is updated for the next frame. This method enables users to predict the hidden fingers through the hand model information of the previous frame using temporal coherence in consecutive frames. As a result of the experiment on various hand poses with the hidden fingers using both hands, the accuracy showed over 95% and the performance indicated over 32fps. The proposed method can be used as a contactless input interface in presentation, advertisement, education, and game applications.

In this paper, performance of a PN code acquisition scheme is analyzed and simulated for a DS/CDMA overlay system where a CDMA user and a narrowband user coexist in the same frequency band. A narrowband user is modelled as a narrowband interference (NBI) located at the fraction of a CDMA user's bandwidth. To suppress the NBI, an interference suppression filter is employed at the receiver frontend. Acquisition performance is evaluated in terms of mean acquisition time using state transition diagram for acquisition process. To apply for a DS/CDMA mobile cellular environments, multiple access interference and imperfection of power control are taken into account in the analysis of acquisition performance. The imperfect power control is considered by modelling the power of each user to be lognormally distributed about nominal received power. From the simulation results, it is shown that for the cases of perfect and imperfect power control, the interference suppression filter is very effective for supprssion of the NBI and rapid PN code acquisition in a DS/CDMA overlay environment. It is also shown that the one-sided tap number of 5 for interference suppression filter is sufficient to suppress the NBI. And, capacity estimates are compared based on acquisition and BER performance. The analysis in this paper can be applied to the practical situations for a DS/CDMA overlay environment.
